Event Details
Join us in celebrating the remarkable journey of Dr. Clementine Msengi, a Georgetown author who recently published her memoir on her harrowing escape from the Tutsi Genocide 30 years ago. Dr. Msengi will share readings from her memoir, and we’ll reveal the trailer for Spared: The Documentary, which follows her return to Rwanda this summer. The evening will also highlight Rwandan culture with a drum circle demonstration, traditional dance, and perhaps even a taste of Rwandan cuisine.
About the Project
Dr. Msengi and Andrew Richey were introduced through a mutual friend in Oklahoma, only to discover they are neighbors here in Georgetown. They quickly became friends and decided to work together to document her journey home in the summer of 2025 as she returns to Rwanda to seek answers about what happened to her family, confront perpetrators to learn why they acted as they did and work towards forgiving them, to reclaim the plot the held her childhood home, to gain knowledge for her teachings on peace and reconciliation, and to finally fully confront her past.
One of the most meaningful aspects of this project is that the filmmakers involved have all committed to donating proceeds from the film to establish a nonprofit on the site of Dr. Msengi’s childhood home in Rwanda. The nonprofit will honor those lost during the genocide and work to foster unity and peace.
Clementine’s Journey: Clementine’s personal story is one of survival through the unimaginable by leaning on faith and a lifetime spent creating blessings from suffering. As a child, she hid from violent attackers during the Tutsi genocide, narrowly escaping death. With nothing but her worn study Bible in hand, she hid alone in homes and farmland, found new friends in refugee camps, traveled across borders, always resolutely putting one foot in front of the other. The loss of her family and community haunted her as she fled the country and later settled in the U.S. Despite her academic success and achievements, Clementine felt her healing was incomplete.
